I wanted to make a list of red flags in MUA‘s you should watch out for! Your wedding day is one of if not the most special day for you. When choosing someone like a Makeup Artist, you need to choose carefully. I know price is always what we look at first but make sure you look beyond that too!

  1. Make sure your MUA has a contract. This not only is safer for the MUA but more importantly, for you! If you do not have a signed contract, your MUA can flake on you with no repercussions. When an MUA has a contract it also means they are taking their business seriously. Contracts are very important when looking for a reliable MUA. This is someone who has thought out what they need for their business. Contract for some people are intimidating because it is a commitment, but I think that’s the reason an MUA with a contract is more reliable. They want both of you to be covered. So everyone can approach the wedding day with ease and reassurance.

  2. Make sure you vibe with your MUA. They are there to do a job, but you should be able to feel comfortable with the person crashing your getting ready party! This is so important. If you can’t meet in person, then call them and have a conversation! If you feel uncomfortable around this person then I would not want them at such a priceless and fun part of the wedding day. You need to connect with your MUA just as you would with your hairdresser. You trust her, you laugh with her, you want to be in her chair. Find that person! If you find that person then you can have a go-to MUA for any other event you may have in your lifetime.

  3. Make sure you are choosing a MUA that is hygienic! No double dipping, and no reusing brushes without cleaning them. You want to make sure you are being taken care of on all angles. Your MUA should always be using disposable mascara wands and lip wands. The eyes and mouth have so many ways of transferring bacteria. As for brushes, they should have as many brushes they need for everyone in the party to have a new set or clean them in between at the very least! If someone uses a brush on one client with acne and then again on you, that is transferring the bacteria from their face to yours. Braking out on your wedding day is the last thing you want!

  4. Always schedule a trial! I know it might seem like a hassle but it will give you a piece of mind that you like how they do your makeup and it helps us MUAs out a lot! We get to know you and your face! When you practice on a face then you can do it better and faster the next time! Trials are so important!!!

  5. Price! Obviously you want to get the best price you can, however make sure you know why they are charging what they charge. Someone who is charging less may be just starting out, which is fine we have all been there, however if you are looking for someone with experience and products that are going to make you feel special and pampered on your big day, then it might be worth spending a little more on your MUA. Pricing will differ in different areas of the country. They will also differ if you live in highly populated area vs not. Just do your research! Find someone who is going to be your right hand gal for everything beauty. So all you have to focus on is your big day with the person you love.
